About
Project Apricot

After Orange and Peach, Blender Institute continued with a new open project: Apricot. This time it wasn’t a movie but a 3D game! Starting february 1st 2008, a small team of again the best 3D artist and developers worked on a game jointly with the on-line community. The main character in the game has been based on the short 3D animation open movie Peach. The project ended in august, and in october 2008 the DVD and game was released.
The Game
The original project goal was to work on a cross platform game (at least Linux, Windows, OS X), using Blender for modeling and animation, Crystal Space as 3D engine and delivery platform, and Python for some magic scripting to glue things together. The purpose was to not only make a compelling 3D game experience, but especially to improve and validate the open source 3D game creation pipeline, with industry-standard conditions.
Halfway during the project, we noticed the great advances made in Blender’s internal Game Engine, so we’ve added delivering the project entirely in Blender as a target for Apricot as well.
Targets
- Validation: create full functional game prototype, industry quality
- Crystal Space development: HDR lighting, game logic, character animation
- Blender development: animation prototyping, pipeline improvements, GLSL (node) shading editor, improvements in logic editing (states), general Blender GE improvements.
- Realize in Open Source (GPL/LGPL), deliver in Open Content (Creative Commons)
- Education: Training/workshops, presentations, documentation, DVD
How
The Blender Foundation and Crystal Space community will be the main financiers for Apricot. Additional support will be by Grupo Ikusnet and the Dutch Game Days Foundation. As for the previous open movies, a pre-sale campaign to purchase the DVD has been organized by the Blender Foundation as well as by Crystal Space.

Hi
Can the team say wich linux used while developing and where i can find some dovumentation on how to install and configure all the stuff
Hi Naiden, I always like to see the credits in the end of the movies I watch. I have notice in ( Elephants Dream - http://www.vimeo.com/1132937 ) there are a list of Open Sourece Projects softwares they are specially thanks, and they mention Ubuntu Linux, Gimp, Inkscape, CinePaint, Phyton and others. In another videos on Youtube, showing the Peach studio and their team, I saw the default Ubuntu’s background, version 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon). In this video they were working on ( Big Buck Bunny ) movie. I’m using the Ubuntu 8.10 - the Intrepid Ibex - released in October 2008. You just need go to the menu -> System -> Administration -> Software Sources, so you have to check the option (Community-maintained Open Source software (universe), confirm clicking the close button and finally clicking on the reload button to update the repository. After that you should open a terminal and type this line: sudo apt-get install blender, confirm the question with Y and you will be ready to have fun. The Blender will be in the Graphics menu. Sorry if you already know these information about Linux, but I think it would be helpful to other people here. The Ubuntu is to easy to use/update and install new packages! PS. The Yafray render, will be installed as well, the Blender is 2.46 version. I hope you understood my bad English.
Hello! Thank you for your work!
What about supporting mouse control, changing screen resolution and antialiasing settings in Yo Frankie?
The game won’t start on my Windows XP computer. I have 4MB of RAM and a Pentium 4 processor, which may not be the latest and greatest, but should be enough to run Yo Frankie! Clicking in the .exe file starts something: low-res boxes blink up and are gone. Firewall set to accept the .exe file as an exception. Any ideas what’s happening and why? Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. Jonathan
hey how do i play?
what are the controls?
@jonathan, do you mean 4gb of ram? thats quite a lot for a P4 machine.. my guess is your graphics card is not supported. Check to make sure your card has enough vram (memory) and high enough pixel shader version.
I’ve wandered your site and still have no idea what the hell who or what Yo Frankie is, besides a game. I’m not downloadinf jack without some visuals, descriptions, general plot or something.
After all the effort that went into greating this awesome free game, somebody really should create a .DEB package and include it into Ubuntu so that people can install and play the game easily! A lot of people find it hard to download ZIP files, extract files, chmod to make things executable and so on…
If someone knows how to create .DEB files please help out here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/311938
Everyone that cares what T.O. downloads, raise your hand.
Not me.
How do I run and play the game?

Just read your article. I added it to my favorites. Your site is awesome and especially this article. Keep posting !
how do you change the resolution?
很有帮助的文章,学习了!
Such a thought-provoking idea. I will come back to your website very soon.
It’s still cloaked in camo, but the 2012 Hyundai Veloster is beginning to shed its winter skin before its big reveal early next year. Not only has it gone green in the process, but details on its passenger side dual doors and interior are coming into focus. As we’ve noted before, the Veloster (or possibly Tiburon) appears to share two different door designs - a traditional opening on the driver’s side and a smaller passenger door possibly accompanied by another rear access opening.
Just a note to say thanks for putting up a great effort for your website.
Realmente me encanta este blog, y los comentarios me parecen muy atinados. Gracias.
Hey, I just love your posts!
is it alright if I use some of the content from this post if I give a link back to your site?
Good Evening, I do not normally post feedback on articles, as I prefer to read only. However I find the web site that you have written earlier has very insightful information, and I discover it very informational. I was searching on Aol for how to set goals information and discovered your eye opening website. Could you write something the same special on how to set goals? Thanks. ~ Gaye Boshart
Hi, I am working on a project in e-learning domain. I’m using Blender for animation and modeling, BGE for game logic. So I needed some help regarding repository of meshes and run-time loading of meshes. Can you please give me your email id.
