Just a short note! DVD is done, we’re still doing some tests, and we need Campbell for final blessings, but tomorrow it will be ready to go to the DVD reproduction factory!

Printing takes 2 weeks, shipping will happen during weekend of 1-2 november, customers will then get the copy within 1 (europe) or 2 (rest of world) weeks. Exciting :)

  • Blender 2.48a update: A serious bug in the GE requires a new build of the players/runtimes, which we want to include this on the DVD. Meaning our planning shifts with a week… sorry.

  • Nov 7 update: DVD factory started printing! We expect the dvds in end of the week, and ship saturday 14th.

  1. Tears of joy!!
The postman thought delivering the BBB DVD was the worst time of his carreer. The next weeks are going to ruin him for sure.

  2. awesome

  3. Very cool - congratulations to the team on taking part in the Apricot Game project ( even the CS developers! :) )
The enhancements to the GE were immense ( with of course help from non-Apricotees, such as Beniot and Erwin ).

The credibility of the GE has increased 10-fold within the eyes of the Blender community over the last number of months.

Good to have yet another collecters item on the shelf.

    Great Work en Effort Guys!

  5. Yeah ! Blender game engine rocks ! Blender rocks, rock rocks !

  6. Mmmmm… Sheep throwing… :D

    Bring it ON!

  7. After playing one of the technical demos (I guess that’s what it was) I believe YoFrankie! is going to play a major role in popularising games for the linux platform. Congrats to all who participated in the project.

  8. That’s a really cool news ;)

  9. Great news! How many DVDs are you printing?

  10. Congrats to all!! :)

  11. \m/

  12. WAHOO!!!!!

Can’t wait for my pre-ordered DVD to arrive! Really looking forward to this, congrats Apricot team!!!

  13. Glad to hear!
When is the game going to be released online? November 7-20?

  14. That’s great news.

I thought they would be ready for Blender Conference though…

(The Blender e-shop at BConference will sell Apricot as well? please)

  15. Is there going to be a special Apricot Build of Blender 2.48 or something because the Node Based GLSL does not work in the Final Blender 2.48. I think this is more important to us than a quick release cut of the DVD if this functionality is not there. I have tested this is several scenes and none of the GLSL nodes work. The backface culling button seems to be missing also. This may be a feature change I don’t know. Please do not ship the Apricot DVD without the GLSL nodes. We bought more than one of the DVDs.

I have pictures of the GLSL nodes working with Alphas in Blender 2.47 Apricot Build and not at all in Blender 2.48:
    http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?p=1234073#post1234073

    Cheers,
    Nate Nesler

  16. Campbell (ideasman42) says:

    @MatrixNAN
apricot wont use a special blender version, the problem with nodes not working for you sounds like a bug somewhere, it works on my home system and the ones at the blender institute.
However this isnt a problem for Yo-Frankie since we dont use nodes for the main levels since the shaders can become a bit too slow.

Backface culling is only disabled in the 3D view (to match the internal rendering engine)

  17. Francisco Ortiz says:

    YAY! Great!

Take care with terrorists when the final version is ready for printing. ;)

  18. I can’t wait! Great work guys!

  19. i think buy one

do you think there will be a french version later?

  20. blenderman345 says:

    Downloadable time? :(

  21. There will be a download later right? I assume that this works the same way as BBB, orderers first, then the masses :).

  22. @Campbell, Thank you so much for replying. Thats good to know that its just my computer. I will try it on Linux I may get different results. I have not had a chance to test it on Linux yet. Thank you so much for your hard work on the DVD. We will be very excited to get it. If its a bug then that means it can be cleared up at a later time, so that is not going to bother us. We need the nodes for some of the stuff we are doing so that was the reason for concern. Again thanks so much to the whole Blender Apricot Team.

    Big Thanks,
    Nate Nesler

  23. It sounds interesting and I like the idea of an open Source game.

But at least one thing has to be improved dramatically: Where is “end user” info on your webpage?
What I read: It’s a game, made with Blender, open source, cross platform, gold status,…
But what’s the game about? i don’t play a game just because it’s open source or cross platform.
From the screen shots it looks like a 3D jump’n'run game - but it’s written nowhere. Does it have a story? A goal to reach? Is it kid-compatible or are adult jokes included?

Probably I could answer most of the questions if I read through all of the documentation/form. But I think these questions should be answered on the main website.

  24. Bring on dems sheep!
They’ve only got a couple weeks to enjoy life.

  25. Francisco Ortiz says:

    @Michael

I think Michael have a good point here! That was a very nice critic.
But don´t worry Michael! I believe Ton is very concerned about this kind of detail.

Don´t forget to link this Blog to BBB using BOLD guys! ;)

  26. @Michael
    Great comment, Michael.
I too got excited when following the development — but buy games based on their trailers / reviews.

  27. this for sure isn’t a game you buy because of the gaming experience though. :)

i think you should only buy it if you are interested about doing games yourself and about the technology behind it and/or if you want to support blender.

  28. Did you get my request to change the address I want you to send the game?

  29. Blender will soon rule the world and u ppl hav to prove it .Free software rockZZ!!!

  30. @srikar
Blender can not rule the world, people will make forks ;)

  31. looking forward for more information about this. thanks for sharing. Eugene

  32. hey guys! I was wondering if I could reach you before the final blender 2.48a was released, because I am experiencing another serius bug, but im noy sure where to inform about it! The blenderartist tread here:

    http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=138644

  33. Srikar and Sma

    “srikar say:
Blender will soon rule the world and u ppl hav to prove it .Free software rockZZ!!!
    sma:
Blender can not rule the world, people will make forks”

But of course that if Srikar and Sma, Star Wars: The Ton Wars!

  34. wow… good catch guys! and very conscientous to go to the trouble of bug fixing before releasing. good on you.

  35. Thanks for the delaying it for the bug. We would much prefer a clean release than a rushed DVD release of the Yo Frankie. You guys have just worked too hard for all of this to have some bugs rain on your parade. :) ;) We are very happy and don’t mind the wait.

Thanks So Much For All Your Hard Work,
    Nate Nesler

  36. Whaaat? no patches afterwards? aaaawww, I got used to those like little doses of crack that magically make a game better… or make it somehow work instead of crash to the desktop.

Good week hunting, see you probably at the Blender conference.

  37. Francisco Ortiz says:

Interesting! Do you have additional information about this bug? Is it possible to help?

    Good luck!

  38. Campbell (ideasman42) says:

@Francisco Ortiz, the bug happened when frankie or momo threw a springbox into the water, then tail-whipped.
It was because the radar sensor was not removing its reference to the springbox that was removed once it hit the water.

A workaround was pretty easy - let the springbox stay in the water, or have python check the physics ID of an object from the radar sesnor before using it. However the same bug could come up in more obscure places.
Benoit fixed it within 24hrs, but we thought it would be better to test further and see if there were other bugs on further testing.

Brecht has also fixed GLSL crashes and today I fixed a nasty bug that made the BGE crash often from python errors.
Not to mention many other non BGE bugs that have been fixed over the week.

Looks like it was worth the wait, 2.48a has been tagged in SVN so we’ll have a release real soon :)

    - Campbell

  39. Glad to hear you found the bug — keep up the good work! Looking forward to the arrival of the DVD!

  40. Development by the core developers isn’t going to stop after the game is released, is it Campbell?

Also, will the game be small enough to be included on most linux distributions? I’d really like to see the day YoFrankie is included on the Ubuntu disk or at least in an Ubuntu repository.

    Just curious,
    YoYoFargo

  41. Campbell (ideasman42) says:

@YoYoFargo, the blender gamefiles compress to 144meg, could probably get to ~60-80 with compressed textures. (jpeg / DDS) and removing some testlevels that are not really worth including anyway.

Development continues, though blenders internals will be frozen for blender 2.5 reactor. I wouldn’t expect it to slow down that much since devs can still work in their branches.

  42. Sounds hasn’t worked on intel macs in gameblender since 2.37a, I’m sure it’s been reported and there have been numerous forum threads discussing the issue, but it still hasn’t been fixed. Also, some Imacs framerates drop an insane amount when real time shadows are used, which didn’t occur in earlier builds.

Can’t wait for apricot and 2.48a

    Gomer

  43. i would be nice if some blender game engine expert could answer my question in this thread: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=131325 :)

  44. great. i am waiting for the download now :)
these projects are great. BBB forever ;)
    greetings from germany, Jochen

  45. Hi,
Anyways I am going to show this to the members of my club…If that’s aright with you? I just don’t want to show something without telling the owner.

  46. @ AK21: is Creative Commons! :) you’re free to reproduce, distribute, share, blah blah blah, you don’t have to tell us, just go!

the only thing needed to show the open movies, or open games, is to leave the original credits (that’s the attribution part of the license), and to share it with your people (like showing them the game, and tell them that they can also get it and do whatever they want with it), that’s all.

  47. OK Thanks. Just thought I will ask :D.

  48. OneEyedOdin says:

Good to hear you found a bug and fixed it

    BBB and YF forever!

  49. Marcelo Wanderley says:

    Hi all,

When you leave the torrent version to download?

    tks.

  50. great. we are waiting for the download :)

  51. Hello Campbell, Pablo Vazquez, Ton and everyone

The overlap of several items with alpha (TGA) creates
transparencies and partial disappearance of objects. (a fern on a river is invisible,
if both materials involves alpha and Ztransp). Go resolve this
display problem in the Blender 250?

After creating a number of material and texture, it still can not
added new texture, the software crashes and return to windows!
Against by using the Ctrl + F1 to load adding library material outside
    the file is working properly.
A button removal equipment in blender would be welcome!

Is it possible to include a converter bump maping for textures
with the creation of a special icon to dedicate this publishing group in the
    UV / Image Editor

Go develop in the Edit Mode a selection of faces by materials?
will be much more convenient in terms of efficiency dan time.
    This solution exists such?

Thank you all for your work titanic
and good continuation to the apricot!

  52. And one more thing to Deloince Jean-Pierre’s list.

Loading “new game” with actuators, two, three times(from one blend to another), causes blender 2.48a (and lower) to crash..I think this is related to memory leaking. The only stable blenderplayer in that matter is zaghaghi’s player with memory leak fix for ver2.45.

Great work guys! “Yo Frankie!” rocks! And it’s a grate showcase for the BGE.

  53. Hello Haidme how will you?

  54. I can’t wait to see this on a mobile phone platform! it would be so cool to see ti on a Krave! Has anyone else seen it? (motorola.com/krave) It’s a flip phone with a touch screen, 2 MP camera, full html browser and bluetooth functionality. Definitely worth checking out.

  55. I haven’t heard anything in a while. How’s the progress going? Has anyone received their DVD’s yet?

    NathanKP - Inkweaver Review

  56. @NathanKP
I think when all things go as planned Europe customers will get 15/16 November and other 22/23 November. Just read the post with update.

  57. Sorry for all the silence… the Blender Conference + week advanced training here with Bassam and Andy (went great) and then 5 days flu… but we’re expecting the dvd copies here friday and ship them all saturday 14th.

  58. whee!

  59. The flu tends to appear at the most inconvenient moments! :(

This stuff is looking great. Can’t wait to check it out! Good job making this, people. :)

  60. Yuhhuuuuuuuuuu!

  61. The end is nigh! Almost mythical if you ask me, like 2.5.. I’ll believe it when I see it. Let’s hope Ton wasn’t too put off on the idea of more realtime projects in the future. In the end this one got a lot of fanfare and came together.

MrE, sorry about the apricot shooting bazooka man. It was planned, but that was before all plans changed now and forever. We just didn’t have time to consider many extras in the end, the pressure was on to not fail and all.

  62. Well, since the game is open source, maybe someone will add an apricot shooting bazooka in the future :)
I can’t wait to play the game!

  63. well, saturday 14? Just buy a calendar ;)
    Great anyway

  64. Blender Foundation’s scheduling and predictions about future events are a bit akin to Pixel (http://www.kanzelsberger.com/pixel/), but let’s hope it never gets THAT bad ;)

  65. Ton,

    From Post 53
(The overlap of several items with alpha (TGA) creates transparencies and partial disappearance of objects. (a
fern on a river is invisible, if both material object contains alpha and Ztransp). Go resolve this display problem
    in the Blender 250?)

Well, just after posting the clip I found Alpha, it solved the problem of overlapping. But in the future with blender 250, is what the shadow will be rendered with alpha transparency the image and not directly on the mesh? we can disable shadows with the Clip Alpha?

Is it possible to develop in the Edit Mode a selection of faces by texture in the material? will be much more convenient when there are many different textures in one material on one mesh. This solution exists such?

Thank you in advance and sorry for my curious questions that
often have nothing to do with the original subject of posts.
Long live the gang apricot, Long live Yo Frankie!

  66. @ JayBee

Exactly! Thats the way to be thinking. Im sure someone will come up with a apricot bazooka.

  67. Oh man you guys did a great job on getting that DVD done. Do you think this build will be released for any cell phones? I would love to see this game on the Krave (motorola.com/krave) by Motorola. Ever since I started working with them I have become a HUGE fan of the krave. With a full touch screen keypad built into a clam shell design, it combines form and functionality with the latest in tech. Releasing this game to the Krave is definitely worth consideration.

  68. Ton,
Or is it poster to ask questions and exchange ideas about the evolution of GLSL Blender game engine?
Because I can see that here it is absolutely not the place or poster, (From Post 53, 54, 67, not always
    reply to the request).
There may now be a section for this? I obviously looking for a place or the issues
are directly taken into account pars active developers and regular Blenders.

  69. Hi JP.

The forums on blenderartists.org are much better suited for questions about blender.
Having transparent objects work properly in a (modeling/editing) UI remains a problem, not related to 2.5. It requires a completely different handling of drawing in Blender.

  77. This actually looks like a lot of fun. I second the mobile phone platform idea. That would be AMAZING!

  78. Forgot to ask, would you mind if I reviewed this on my blog at http://www.lightsoutgaming.com ?

  79. @Arconus: that site is one of those pay for accounts. so thanks but no.

  80. Hi,
I’ve got the blender version of Yo Frankie, but it doesn’t work well…
The main menu is ok, but when I start a new game, I only see a white screen and the character status on left-top. I hear the sounds effect when I jump.
I use linux ubuntu 8.10 with an ati radeon 9200.
It works if I emulate the windows version through Wine! (It’s just slow, but works).

    Could someone support me?
my email: bpolimeni [at] gmail [dot] com

    thank you
