You can now test the Linux (well, for Intel machines) packages for the “CrystalSpace Edition” of YoFrankie. There are basically two ways to obtain it:

  • Automatic downloading: go to http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie.xml and follow the instructions on screen. This will download all required packages etc. onto your system and has the added advantage that the program can be kept up-to-date automatically as well - i.e. when a change is made, either to the game or CrystalSpace, the changed component is downloaded automatically (and only that) and used. (Note x86_64 users: you need a very recent version of 0install, 0.35 or newer, to run the package. That means you may have to install that manually on some distros.)
  • One big package: download http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie_run.sh, set it to executable and run it. This is also the file that will go onto the DVD.

These packages were made using 0install which is really pleasant to work with. Also, check out their web page if you want to know what it does to your system (in short: nothing, it won’t mess with your installed software) or anything else.

Update, 2008-09-03: I added a 0install feed that runs YoFrankie without shadows: http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie-MQ.xml (this supercedes the tweak posted earlier in this space). Also, watch this space, more updates to the packages will follow. (No big package for now … a new one will be made later. Right now I don’t want to upload 100MB or so every time something small is changed, bear with me.)

Update, 2008-09-03, #2: http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie.xml was updated to use a newer (faster) build of the engine which also includes the Ogg Vorbis libraries some people found missing.

Update, 2008-09-10: Another engine update with a few fixes. Also, some additional “quality levels” are available: http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie-LQ.xml - “low quality” without reflections, http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie-VLQ.xml - “very low quality” with only per vertex lighting. On the other end of the scale, http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie-VHQ.xml adds some bloom and HDR.

Small note: if you use 0launch on the command line use the ‘-r’parameter to make sure you see the latest version. If you use the GUI, use “Manage Programs” and the “Update or change version” button to select the latest version. Just so you don’t end up with an older version while thinking you use the latest.

  1. Awesome! Will it be in the Ubuntu repositories sometime soon after release?

  2. @Taggerung
    Not in Hardy, not in Ubuntu 8.10 main. Maybe in 8.10 backports, but problably in 9.04.

  3. It does not works with Ubuntu x86_64
    Could we have a simple deb, tar.gz (with binaries) or source code ?

  4. Hi,

    Res, there is still the openal problem, the sound is screwed. I tried to switch to the software renderer, but then no sound. Is this plugin provided with the binary ?

    Also, it takes a long time to shine the lights (~3-4 minutes on a 1.6Ghz dual core) and it’s unplayable (really, really too slow).

    Except that, the 0launch works pretty well here on a debian sid/32bit.

  5. It does not work for me either (Ubuntu x86_64)… manged to install it using 0lunch, but nothing happens when I try to launch Yo Frankie

  6. It doesn’t works for me on Ubuntu 8.04 32 bits.

    crystal 1.2 works fine :-(
    maybe the lack of glsl support :-(
    Perhaps try catalyst again???

    Oh, wonderful. My comment got shortened to zero.

    Ok, here once again, but in short version:

    Gentoo Linux, amd64
    2 GB RAM, YoFrankie_run.sh causes swapping
    it is really slow with less than one frame per second

  10. The apllication starts extremely slow (10 minutes) and I see less than one frame a second.

  11. Bastards! I’ll never use open-source again. I’ll never use BLENDER AGAIN!!!! GREAAAH!
    No Windows build? :P

    Now some serious stuff:
    ———
    Feature requests (Blender Game Engine):

    * Soft Shadows support (it’s called Shadow Filtering right?)
    * Collision box resizing/replacement support. (for like crouching in an FPS, let me know if there is an alternative.)
    * Pygame integration/Sound Engine update? (please… Brecht.. Ik spreek ook Nederlands. Eh.. je bent Vlaams? ehm… :P)
    * Add a Brecht button! :P
    ———

  12. make the .blend bile available!

  13. randomnut: all apricot files are available via svn, http://www.yofrankie.org/?p=234

  14. ok, thanks!

    maby a good reason to switch :)

    managed to get the big package working, it takes around 20 minutes to load, and gets around 4 seconds pur frame.

  16. http://pastebin.ca/1191676

    Log of my first run/install.
    Shader caching did take a long time, way longer than I think it should… maybe I’m underestimating the number of combinations it has to try or something.

    On second run the load was much much quicker (well under a minute) - expected because the cache is used.

    As for running speed - really really slow. Which is very strange unless this is compiled in debug mode. Is it compiled in debug? Because that would explain a lot! xD

  17. I tried to test it my modest system (PM 1.6, 512MB, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700). I installed it using 0install (first option). The installation went just fine. After that it started celstart. I let it run about half an hour and killed the process as it was taking way too much time. Perhaps I let it run some other time some more. Here’s the log I got from running it, http://pasteall.org/2267 . It appears there are some errors that you might want to look at.

    Before I killed the process I checked the memory usage. It took all RAM and then some more (over 1GB of swap!). That might explain why it was so slow. I am getting some more RAM soonish (2 GB) so we will see if it works better then.

    Are you using any XML optimization tool by the way? I don’t know if it would make any difference in this case as I am not well versed enough with Crystal Space but it’s worth asking.

    Have minimum system specifications required to run Yo Frankie! been announced anywhere? It would be nice to know if it could run on my system before spending more time tinkering with it.

  18. 0install worked fine. Took 5 min to load. Maybe should have shipped the game with precalculated lightmaps? Also running at 2 seconds per frame here. Sound works okay.

  19. noone important says:

    I can live with long load time, but here also very low fps - or should I say spf as it’s more than second per frame? :(, taking 75% of memory and 97% of cpu (rest for system) but I think it should work better… I hope it will be fixed for next demo, my card shouldn’t be too old (GF6800), drivers are current and direct rendering is on…

    Other than those troubles, potential can be easily seen :)

    Keep up good work!

  20. Yup, what other said. 0install works okay, but framerate is terribly low. Btw, where are the downloaded files to delete them?

  21. for me it doesn’t work :’(
    ATI HD2400 with ati catalyst 8.8 on a toshiba laptop a200. Ubuntu 8.04
    The game loads fine, i can see the gui but the screen is black…

  22. Mark Hannessen says:

    Mmm.. my comment is zerod..
    Let me try again.

    The game is running quite slow for me.
    Its better when facing and close to walls but still quite unplayable..
    Sound also makes strange beeps.

    I am running YoFrankie under Gentoo Linux on a imac24 with nvidia 8800 GTS ( nvidia-drivers-177.68 ) and 4gb ram.

    Some Additional Info.

    My video card has 512mb vid mem.
    My processor is a Intel Dual core 3.06ghz

    It appears celstart is using 100% cpu when i view it under top.
    i also noticed that celstart doesn’t seem to use the second core i have..

    CPU usage is 100% all the time even when i background or minimize the game window.

    Hope this helps you guys.

  24. Work for me, but at ~1fps, and sound give me a lot of glitch
    Video card is an GeForce 7600 GS, with an Athlon XP2600, 1Go RAM, Fedora 9 + nvidia driver

  25. Please Ubuntu

  26. My first test with my old box, a P4 1.8, 767MB, Geforce 3 with Debian Lenny: Well it works sort of. 0install works, It loads very long and I also get about 1fps. The ground surface is not drawn. Well I expected such a result, as my system is kind of nostalcic ;) I will try it tomorrow with a newer box.

    Apart from the game… 0install (0.34) is the most horrible package system I ever experienced. I uses 100% of my cpu while downloading, it can’t resume, it does not use my local python installation, I can’t minimise the window….

    Are there somewhere nice tar.gz files (or a public repo) of the game with a working build system? Because I would like to try to create Debian/Ubuntu packages.

    Go go yofrankie!

  27. $ 0launch http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie.xml

    …that’s the error i get on Hardy 64bit. It’s seemed to install fine the first time but I can’t find a way to launch it.

  28. Hi!

    I’ve tried to install it in Ubuntu Hardy with Zero2Desktop but it gives me this error:

    Failed to run xdg-desktop-menu (error code 1)

    Any help with this?

    btw, can I compile the game with the svn files? How?

    gobject is a part of GNOME.

  33. Ok yeah, that .sh isn’t working out for me. I don’t know if I’m doing it wrong or what.

    A .deb would remove the confusion.

  34. I’m having the celstart: error while loading shared libraries: libvorbisfile.so.3: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory problem too. I’m on an x86_64 system, and libvorbisfile.so.3 is in /usr/lib/ Is it looking for it somewhere else?

  35. The 0launch installation worked fine for me.

    I can play the game with feeled 1-10 fps depending on where I am.
    The log contains some warnings:

  36. Hi, BGE has still a problem for me poor nvidia card owner. The apricot builds from graphicall.org crash with a “GPU Shader: linking error”. Brecht explained that there is a bug in the nvidia driver, but there is a possible workaround… Will this “bug” be fixed, or is it fixed (where can I get the respective apricot build ;) )?

    Lots of thanks! By the way: Both install variants work but have some warnings and run at a few frames per second. Further more it runs in a window at fixed size. No full screen.

    Keep up great work.

    greets,
    Jonny.

  37. I got decent fps on my gf 6600 by fiddling with some of the engine settings. Hopefully we can pin down the bottleneck soonish.

  38. the crash happens after typing ‘p’ in order to start the game engine

  39. Same error on Hardy x86_64. libvorbisfile.so.3 not found

  40. “One big package: download http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie_run.sh, set it to executable and run it. This is also the file that will go onto the DVD.”

    You’re kidding, right?

    On my Sony Vaio Core Duo 1,6 GHz, 1 GB RAM, GeForce 7400, Nvidia Driver, Ubuntu 8.04 the sound is not working properly, the game runs extremely slow and user input is recognized about a 20seconds after I hit a key. All in all it’s
    unplayable. I hope this changes in the future.

  41. This is depressing, I was hoping for an easy deb file to install on Ubuntu.

  42. On debian etch with “big package” :
    Traceback (most recent call last):
    File “”, line 24, in ?
    ImportError: No module named install

  43. @Konrad
    No, they say that they will put a .sh on the cd, not THIS file.

  44. Hold your horses… We’re trying to find out where the bottleneck is. Soon I’ll hope I can give you a bit more speed (if only by disabling some features).

    Greetings,

  45. Something to try:

    Download: http://crystalspace3d.org/0install/celstart-launcher-1.9.xml
    And either download: http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie.celzip
    or find that celzip archive inside ~/.cache after you ran 0install.

    YoFrankie.celzip is actually a ZIP archive. Extract the file celstart.cfg from it. On line 78 in that file there should be something like: Engine.RenderManager.Default = crystalspace.rendermanager.shadow_pssm. Put a ‘;’ in front of that. That will disable shadows. Put celstart.cfg back in the YoFrankie.celzip archive.

    Then run celstart YoFrankie.celzip

    Some people on the CS channel (#CrystalSpace at freenode.net) have reported better speeds by using this technique.

    Greetings,

  46. @Ethana 2: Ah, I see, I thought it might work since it is linux underneath, but if it depends on Gnome…

  47. Oops, my advice above is slightly wrong. Instead of putting a ‘;’ in front of the line just replace that entire line with:
    Engine.RenderManager.Default = crystalspace.rendermanager.unshadowed

    That should work a lot better. You get no shadows but at least it will be faster.

    Greetings,

  48. Also having problems on debian testing, x86_64:

  53. Well my mistake… I only need to change the user and group in the folder .gnupg :)

  54. Gargh, the download hangs at 99,13%!

  55. No wayyyyyyyy… the game run slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww

    1-3 fps per second maybe
    NVIDIA 7950 GT 512VRAM
    GNU/Linux Kubuntu 8.04
    With drivers of nvidia sure.

    Dam’n! :(

    How I can see the fps in the game?

  56. Ant the crappy downloader starts at the beginning when I hit stop. Wtf? Why don’t they (0install) just use bittorrent? It does not make any sense to use anything else for big files. Big downloads take a while. My provider has often connection problems, so it is not possible for me to download a big file with 0install? Bittorrent would be the solution.

  57. To madman: did you try the suggestion for improving speed?

  58. Very nice, but still very early development. There are very noisy and loud sound bugs from time to time. I couldn’t figure out how to glide, there is no interaction with the water, there are resources (textures etc.) that where not found and I managed to crash the game by falling off the map (following the river):
    FindBestSplitLocation failed: split_loc(nan) <= max1(nan)
    This node contains the following objects:
    0: ’skydome_frankieisland_SkyDome’ (-263.619,-25.8392,-263.619)-(263.619,262.396,263.619)

    AL lib: alSource.c:2295: alcDestroyContext(): deleting 7 Source(s)
    AL lib: alBuffer.c:1122: exit(): deleting 28 Buffer(s)

    Oh, and on exit (Alt-F4) I get a Segmentation Fault.

    But keep up the good work. :)

  59. Here are the libogg, libvorbis and libvorbisfile from the build machine:
    http://ecksdee.sourceforge.net/testing/yofrankie/
    Just put them in your $HOME/.cache/0install.net/implementations/sha1new=75b59188014d433f01857f4ce073e23e803524b0/ directory.
    Should solve the “file not found” errors, but not the screeching/bad sound…

    From what I can see in the config files, here are the key bindings:
    north = Up
    south = Down
    west = Left
    east = Right
    jump = Space
    interact = Alt
    sneak = Shift
    camup = PgUp
    camdown = PgDn
    camleft = Del
    camright = End

  60. To jorrit: Sorry but I don’t try that… ^_^’ I’m forgot read the all post, I’m so excited for the game!!! XD

  61. The Installation process on my Ubuntu Hardy was really good!

    But on my DualCore 2,5 GHz with a Geforce 8600 the game runs very slow :-/
    And Frankie falls in this little water and wont come out any more…

  62. yoff:
    ubuntu = gnu + linux + X + GNOME/KDE/etc.
    OSX = BSD + mach + quartz + Cocoa

    The only thing they have in common is POSIX. OSX doesn’t even ship with a fully functional X server.

  63. in Ubuntu 8.04 64-bit
    0launch dose not find any sutable version of CELStart.
    The 3 versions ther is to chose from all says Linux 686 but all marked as invalid.

  64. The MQ compilation run faster than original.

    And I can say that 3rd update run faster… but still slow.

    My specs on message 58.

  65. I was able to get it running on Gentoo. I don’t have sound on this system so wasn’t able to test that. However I found it very difficult to use. No help as far as what keys do what. Using the arrow keys can make him run, but after a short while he falls into the river and can’t get out.

    Is there supposed to be an options menu for setting up stuff?

  66. Great job.

    But as everybody says, it is very slow (I can’t even run the version with shadows). I can see a little bit of the version without shadows but it seems that many polygons are not drawn at all (mostly the floor it seems). As a consequence, many objects that should have been hidden by those polgons are not hidden, perhaps that’s why it is so slow.

    Hardware configuration: MacBook, Intel Core2 duo, Intel GMA 950 chipset, 2GB RAM

  67. Francico Ortiz says:

    Sadly I can’t test Crystal Space in linux becuse of my ATI video card. Grrrrrrrrrr!

    Nice to hear about this release congratulations guys!

  68. Maybe I’m dumb, but I really can’t get anything to install.
    Neither the YoFrankie.xml nor the YoFrankie-MQ.xml

    0launch starts up, but there is nothing to do in there (neither as user nor as root). There is a grey “Run” button and that’s it.
    Also there is no error log in the console or any message anywhere that would indicate something useful.

    “0install” == “nothing install” so far
    Kinda depressing :(

    Werner

  69. Ah ok, I guess I simply have a 64bit problem - didn’t see that before. Oh well :-/

    Werner

  70. To Francico Ortiz: what video card do you have? ATI cards should work fine under linux. At least mine does. With the latest AMD drivers they really work very well for CS.

    Greetings,

  71. Mark Hannessen says:

    Ok,

    I just gave the no shadow xml a try and that one runs really really smooth on my pc.

    I did found some anoying issues after my short tour.

    1. most of the sheep end up walking themselves into the river after a short time playing.
    2. i get stuck in the terrain quite often.
    3. i get a lot of “frozen” animations. especially the jumping animation.
    4. there are issues with looking through walls and terrain. ( like the hollow tree you can walk trough )
    5. the camera is not thinking with the player. In my opinion it should try to get “behind” the character as soon as appropriate. i very often found myself looking at the left or right side of your character, leaving me guessing where i was going.

    Other then that…

    It was a huge improvement over my first try :p

  72. Hi,

    Really nice to se YoFranie in action, as a game. I tested the game on a Dell XPS M1710 (ArchLinux, KDE 4.1, latest nvidia drivers, etc), but still the demo took 5 minutes to start, and ran @ ~1FPS. However, facing the stone wall increased the framerate some.

    Loaded shaders?

    using the normal XML file, with version 4 I guess.

    Intel Core 2 Duo 1.66 Ghz with Gefore 7300 under linux 32 bits with the nvidia 173.14.09-pkg1.run driver.
    The game takes 5 minutes to boot on the first time, and then 40 seconds maybe on the other times.
    I do have 1-2 fps with difficulty to control frankie, but the graphics are nice.

    Thank you very much for your hard work.

  74. I got it to run finally after I updated my machine. I have 2 GB of RAM now. During initialization phase it was barely enough but it worked. The game itself doesn’t look too good here. It’s mostly black with blue here and there. Frankie’s image and sheep counter (?) show up just fine though. The framerate must be somewhere around 1 frame per minute.

  75. Eduard - Gabriel Munteanu says:

    Could it be that NVIDIA drivers suck once again? AFAIR, I’ve heard people (from Wine) say NVIDIA Linux drivers don’t support GL_EXT_bindable_uniform, which if true it could be one of the major bottlenecks for GLSL shaders. This isn’t Wine, but Apricot nevertheless uses OpenGL.

    In this respect, I tested myself Oblivion in Wine on a GeForce Go 7300 (which has no bindable uniforms, but it’s interesting to see the difference) with ARB shaders vs. GLSL. ARB stuff doesn’t need bindable uniforms and does not need to reload the uniforms when relinking, and I was getting ~50% higher FPS than with GLSL.

    It could be worthwhile to profile Apricot and CrystalSpace with OProfile and see where’s the bottleneck. In the previous ARB vs. GLSL issue, I was getting 100% CPU usage in NVIDIA’s libGL, triggered by the uniform reloading code in Wine.

  76. downloaded light version, working in gentoo with fx5200 and nvidia-drivers 173.14.09 in HT 3000.
    But it looks like is not using SMP, and is so slow..
    I cannot move around or do anything, it does not respond to keyboard or mouse.
    Looks nice!

  77. Thank you for the version without shadows, instead of about 1 FPS I get now maybe 60 or more frames per second.
    http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie-MQ.xml

    The following problems do still exist:
    * Everything is very dark with some exceptions like the water.
    * One branch has an error texture: http://img510.imageshack.us/my.php?image=missingtexturexn3.jpg
    * It crashed one time. log: http://pastebin.ca/1194818
    * somtimes strange sounds appear

    @Eduard: I have a NVIDIA graphic card too(Geforce 7800).

  78. Any plans for a mac version?

  79. Botond Szasz says:

    Not working. Ubuntu 8.04 32 bit.

    http://pastebin.com/m76c3e022

  80. Any option to change the resolution of the game?

    I will test on
    AMD Duron 1.0 Ghz
    512 RAM
    Ubuntu 8.04
    NVIDIA GeForce 4 MX

  81. The version with medium quality run on this machine (see #82), but some textures are missing, simply don’t appear in the level. Obviously I can’t see the water and other stuff because this VCard is very old.

    Near to the wall the game run smoothly and fast.
    http://img125.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pantallazo3ax0.png

    But when I change the camera to the rest of the level, the frames per second change 1 per second or almost.
    http://img135.imageshack.us/my.php?image=pantallazo4nw5.png

  82. @Bill: about OSX, you can try that build, which needs testing:
    http://www.crystalspace3d.org/downloads/contrib/celstart-1.9.0-CSr30980-CELr3667-OSX-x86.tar.lzma
    Beware it has not the latest speed improvements, but if it runs we’ll know we’re on the right track…
    You’ll need YoFrankie.celzip from:
    http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankieData-20080903.1.tar.lzma
    Then unpack both, go into celstart-… directory then you should have to:
    ./celstart_wrapper /path/to/YoFrankie.celzip
    Please report on IRC #crystalspace @chat.freenode.net about the result (esp. MistaED will be interested).

    @madman: to change window size, create an $HOME/.crystalspace/Apricot.cfg with that content (change values to your liking):
    Video.ScreenWidth = 640
    Video.ScreenHeight = 480

  83. Francico Ortiz says:

    @Jorrit: where did you get your driver? Which linux distribution did you use? :)

    Thank you!

  84. To Francico Ortiz: I use gentoo. The newer AMD drivers are included with that distro.

    Greetings,

  85. Got the YoFrankie_run.sh to run, after transfering the 32-bit libvorbis files across to the .cache directory.

    Spec:

    Kubuntu Hardy
    Intel Core Duo: E4500 @ 2.2Ghz
    2GB RAM
    GeForce 8600 GT 512MB

    When facing a wall it runs superbly fast. When facing inwards to the scenery the frame rate drops greatly. I get the feeling it’s trying to render everything.

    The Olaunch wouldn’t start for me as it stated it could not find a compatible version type for my computer. I’m assuming this is related to the 32-bit libvorbis problem.

  86. Eduard - Gabriel Munteanu says:

    In regard to what kit89 said, it could be useful to set the clipping distance to a lower value, if possible.

  87. Mark Hannessen says:

    @Eduard

    my linux card nvidia 8800 GTS says it supports GL_EXT_bindable_uniform

  88. My initial reaction is that in the attempt to make things easier on yourselves, you’ve made things more difficult than they need to be for the end users. Basically, 0install is a waste of bandwidth on any platform apart from x86 as it kindly downloads libs that I already have on my system and are more than capable of running the game.

    What was wrong with providing two tarballs? One for the game data and one for the binaries. This would have cut your bandwidth usage and allowed those of us on platforms other than x86 to not jump through hoops to test this game.

  89. @Bob:
    0install just provides an easy way to extract and put tarballs in place…
    If you want to do this by hand, just do it… tarballs are there:
    CELStart runtime: http://www.crystalspace3d.org/downloads/contrib/
    YoFrankieData: http://www.crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/
    Once you’re set, just run: “celstart_wrapper YoFrankie.celzip”.
    Also, nothing stops anyone to build CS & CEL themselves to make their own celstart binary…

    Please don’t put down the efforts being made at packaging for the benefit of everyone.
    Thanks.

  90. Yeah, really nice, this pre-version :) (even if the build with shadows don’t work on my computer)
    But there is a big problem : the camera don’t follow the character (by behind), and the key left/right/front/behind are relatives to the camera and not to the character orientation ! I think it’s illogical and difficult to play like that … Is is possible to use more classical follow-up and direction (like on the fist playable demo in .blend) ? Thanks a lot !
    (And sorry for my English, I’m French, I hope you understood me …)

  91. Eduard - Gabriel Munteanu says:

    @Mark
    Yes, all Geforce 8 series cards support it, but if what I heard is true, there are (stability?) issues with the NVIDIA drivers on Linux when using this extension, so it’s probably not used.

  92. @ Nico, the classical follow-up and direction you saw in the first playable demo in .blend was for the Blender Game Engine, the version of the game here in this blogpost is the Crystal Space game engine.

  93. I tried to run the Yo Frankie but it has passed over 20 minutes and nothing had happened! The whole RAM was consumed!
    I used a big package. Does anyone know what is the matter?

  94. Finally got the game to run - unfortunately I got the same problem as Epsilorn mentioned above:

    GUI is displayed (The image of Franky, a “000″ counter and an acorn with “1″ next to it)
    The rest of the screen is black.

    Intel Core 2 Quad 2,66GHz
    Radeon HD 3870

    Werner

  95. Hans-Olof Hansson says:

    Downloaded the second (big) file and started it. It started but was extremely slow. CPU running about 100% with the celstart process. The sound was intermittently with about 10% duty cycle, mostly silence. There was game graphics, but slow. Did not get em moving, though.

    My computer is a Pentium 2.66GHz with 3GB RAM and a NVIDA 6200 based graphics card.

  96. The performance of the following version is fine for me:
    http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie-MQ.xml
    I use a Gefore 7800.

    Not so nice is that a lot of things are to dark. The ground for example looks as if it is night, but the mushrooms on it look like as if it is day.

    I also got a crash:
    http://pastebin.com/m56bb16cd

  97. Experiencing the same problem as Höhrer and Epsilorn (HUD is visible and everything else is black), Also using an ATI-card and Ubuntu 8.04….

  98. Same problem here: anything but the hud is black.
    Tested on two machines:
    Radeon X1550 Series (fglrx 8.5), 3GB of ram, Archlinux (kernel 2.6.25.11).
    Radeon X1300/X1550 Series (fglrx), 2GB of ram, Debian lenny/sid (kernel 2.6.22-3)

  99. 1) I am downloading it now, but seeing all the comments about it not working on Ubuntu, i’m worried its a waste of time.

    2) Why not just a .tar.gz self-containing thing. I don’t, I repeat, I don’t want to install something without properly using my package manager. Otherwise its going on the user-level.

    The self-executable thingie and 0install is an insult. Please don’t do that.

    What’s next? DRM? Spyware? Seems like the next step up from annoying installers.

    I repeat: NO INSTALLERS
    What were you guys thinking?

    Give us a .tar.gz and leave the packaging for specific distrobutions upto the community.

  100. Alright so the big package just starts and runs…

    Sorry for my FUD.

    It takes a while and is a bit slow. There are a bunch of clipping issues.
    The sound beeps from time to time.

    The water shader isn’t actived when the camera is in the water (and yeah, that can happen)

    I also have no clue which keys to use .. i figured the space and arrows.
    It also had no way to exit ..

    I think launching fullscreen would be smart .. with escape exiting the program.

  101. @Meneer R:

    Links to the tarballs are shown in the 0install XML feeds, which you can just browse. See comment #93.
    For source code, check out CS & CEL, there’s even some debian package related stuff in CS/scripts/deb/.
    For key bindings, see comment #62.
    So far, the call to distro-specific packagers (see “Packagers needed !” post from May 19th and “Apricot packagers - status?” thread on CS-devel mailing list) has yielded no result that I know of, and I certainly don’t remember you offering help about that…
    Please consider that it’s a testing package, that *your* post is a tad bit insulting.

    Btw, people using the normal (not MQ, not .sh script) 0install package with 0launch should update using 0destkop URL-to-YoFrankie-feed.xml,
    the sound problem (screeching/strange sound) should be fixed in there (celstart-runtime version 1.9.31068.3680).
    Note the shadow is broken tho, should be fixed later this week.

    Thanks for your support…

  102. I couldn’t get it to run fast enough on an Ubuntu 8.04 system with a GeForce 7025 to be playable. I tried both 0install feeds. The second one was a little more playable, but still very slow.

  103. To answer a few questions on Zero Install here:

    1) On non-x86 compatible systems 0launch shouldn’t be downloading anything, because there are no binaries for other platforms listed in the feed. If it does, please report it!

    2) If a was added to the Python feed then it wouldn’t need to download that on supported platforms (Debian, Red Hat, etc) which already have Python. However, Python binary compatibility with C extension modules is very poor due to UCS2/UCS4 issues, so maybe that’s the reason it isn’t listed.

    3) The big tarball thing is a bit experimental. Feedback welcome: http://0install.net/0export.html
    It unpacks the whole archive to your temporary directory (probably /tmp) by default. If you use a small tmpfs partition, this might cause high memory use. Future versions should offer the choice of running in-place or adding a menu entry. It should start faster if you run it with the ‘0launch’ command though, because the big tarball unpacks itself first every time you run it.

    YoFrankie is one of the first really big programs using this method, but it gives us some motivation to add resumable downloads, deltas for updates, etc.

  108. re: “No module named install”

    Do you have the complete .sh file (what size is it?). If it is truncated then maybe that would explain the error.

  109. Nope - 0installer doesn’t work and sh (117,5Mb) too. Sh run file after double click do 100% cpu usage and after some minutes is over - no game no start. Ubuntu 8.04 (gnome @ ati card)… :(

    Is there an md5 sum?

  111. Second try with “0install” on Dual Xeon @2Ghz / nVidia Corporation NV44 [Quadro NVS 285] - drv version 173.14.12
    on Fedora 8. Installation without any problem, but even with “very low quality” entry, I don’t have more than few fps (~5)
    Is there any tools to measure / display real FPS ?
    Which configuration is “required” for good rendering ? (~20-30 fps ?)

  112. @waby38:
    To display the FPS counter, create a $HOME/.crystalspace/Apricot.cfg file, and put that line in it:
    System.Plugins.iBugPlug = crystalspace.utilities.bugplug
    One can also change the window size by adding lines like these:
    Video.ScreenWidth = 640
    Video.ScreenHeight = 480

  113. where did the windows/ updated linux builds go. I swear they were here in a new update a couple of hours ago

  114. Lohborn: I’ve enthusiastically approved a post here about it, but unfortunately the results are not good enough for public testing yet.

  115. Hm, the latest version (1.9.31101.3701 + 20080910.1) seems to start now … I can finally walk/jump around but the only thing I can see is the water and the sky … no other objects visible :D

    Werner

  116. Actually the LQ.xml and VLQ.xml link seemed to work (although some parts of the game are extremely dark - if I increase the gamma of my graphics card it looks slightly better.).

    The previous comment of mine was about the original YoFrankie.xml file.
    The VHQ link gives me strange artifacts on the screen and I get only sky&water there as well.

    Another thing I’ve seen in the sky&water-only version: The environment is actually reflected in the water (dunno if that’s an image or the actual models)

    Werner

  117. YAY Got it working: http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie-VHQ.xml
    Had to take the 0.36 package for Debian insted of Ubuntus older version of 0install.

    Runs quite good, not optimal preformance, estimate it to run about 15FPS for me.
    Ubuntu 8.04 64/32bit multilib
    AMD 64 Dual core
    2GB Ram
    Nvidia Geforce 8600 Scilent 512MB PCIe

    Its not entirely stable though, easy to get stuck, and sometimes it just goes black. In both cases only solution I know is to restart.

    What bothers me most is the controlls.
    Would be nice to have a easy way to remap them.
    I find the jump (space)
    the arrowkeys but would then like to be able to controll the camera with WASD insted of Del End and such.
    Iv tested all other keys and dont find any other keys to do anything.

    So how do you do the “dubble jump” wher you glide? (dubble tapping the jump button would be the most obvious but dosent work)
    He dosent grabon to edges and climbup like in the video.
    Can not find the taleswing attack key.

    Other than that, it looks very good so fare. :)

  118. I installed the new VLQ version (0install -r link_to_version). It kills my X after “initializing Frankie” and returns to the login screen.

    I tested it on Ubuntu (Hardy). System specs: PM 1.6, 2GB, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700.

  119. @ Lejoni: the Crystal Space version of Yo Frankie! doesn’t have doublejump -> glide, it was a decision of the CS game designer (Dariusz) to make Frankie able to glide only from high places, also there is no double jump nor tailwhip (taleswing).

  120. Don’t know if this is useful but…

    Processor 2x Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU T7300 @ 2.00GHz
    Memory 2075MB (994MB used)
    Operating System Ubuntu 8.04.1
    OpenGL Renderer GeForce 8600M GS/PCI/SSE2
    Version 2.1.2 NVIDIA 169.12

    I installed 0launch
    runned YoFrankie.xml and YoFrankie-VHQ.xml
    and took some screenshots :) all went well
    It’s a petty we don’t have a menu, a way to adjust brightness, sound, more maps and etc
    couldn’t figure it out what to do (can we do anything in this test?)… runned and jumped/flyed around looking sadly at the sheeps (they are waiting there for me to throw them :D
    map - some collisions/areas seem a little buggy, it’s not difficult to get stuck although you can always unstuck (just wait some seconds while character turns around)
    controls - could use different set of keys for camera and movements… or mouse for camera, for look around
    shadows and jump are awesome!
    it will be possible to add new content created by users (mod)? (maps, new models, textures, etc?)
    and multiplayer? I have a couple of friends to whom I would like to throw some sheeps :D

  121. a little more…

    tried VHQ version with 800×600,
    found the Delete, End, PgUP and PgDwn for camera controls. Where’s the “rocket - machinegun - fire - punch - hit - kick” key? the sheeps are asking for it….

    - sometimes, I get stuck with hands in the air… tried to run around and jump like a madman (in a “I’m the king of the map” way) and game started to choke and then got stuck with “wings” opened.
    - a little dark, some terrain is almost black (in the beginning) but I like the colours, liked the sun lightning and shadows but maybe a little more bright environment… we need to see the obstacles :)
    - sheeps can go through each other. I can go through sheeps (lets hope the bullets have a special physics so that I can blast them away eh eh eh).
    - If I’m near an obstacle (a rock or small hill) and keep running it to it, part of the model enters the rock… it’s not rock solid…
    - sheeps seem to run away from me (don’t blame them… they know my intentions) but in a “confused”, disoriented way. they bump into obstacles.
    - water effects seem very good! also liked the the soft “wings” when jumping, can almost feel the wind, and the textures (mushrooms and rocks look very good) :)
    - inside the piraña lake, when you’re underwater by moving the camera controls, the water disappears and you can see red pirañas with black eyes flying…
    - when the pirañas bump into you (they seem only slightly attracted to me… they’re not very hungry I suppose), you jump (they have teeth but dont use them :D they use a “bull” strategy

    oh and my favorite spot is the lake with the red pirañas :) outside the lake, the fishes look like Little Nemo Red Cousin but underwater… you find out that they’re jurassic pirañas with T-Rex teeths

    I like the environment there, waters, colours, etc.
    tried 1280×800 and textures look great!!!!! but isn’t playable…
    also tried 1280×720

    will test fps later but to see the textures quality you must try these resolutions :)
    when can we try/visit more maps????? looking forward to play!!!!!!

  122. I finally got it work. I updated my OS to Mint Linux 5.0, installed proprietary drivers for my ATI GPU and installed the VLQ version of the game. I get around frame per second so it’s not quite playable yet. Much better than before though!

    System specs: PM 1.6, 2GB, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700.

  123. @ nafergo: there is no sheep picking-up-and-throwing, no tailwhip attack and no kick either, in the Crystal Space version.

    You might saw this actions in the video on the blogpost before this one, that is not the Crystal Space engine, is Blender Game Engine.

  124. CS does have sweet shadows though :P

    http://www.xordan.com/yofrankie.avi (divx)

  125. I just noticed I messed up the game data. I made a local change for testing, forgot about it and ended up uploading it with the data to the server. More than once. Anyhow, new data is now available.

  126. Hi all, I am the guy making the Mac OSX builds for the YoFrankie Crystalspace edition, and I need some people to test it out for me. Currently I have a build somewhat working now with python 2.5 inside of the pack and all other libs that are needed to run the game, and it was built on a Leopard 10.5.2 intel machine with an 8600GT video card.

    However I have 2 problems with this build so far, the .app system of drag&drop&run is almost complete but at the moment the game must be started from the terminal because clicking on it does nothing. The second problem and I’m hoping it is just related to my machine, is that the crystalspace.glcg plugin fails to compile any shaders so the game is not really playable, all I seem to get is the HUD (perhaps the lower quality mode will work, I’ll test this out right now).

    The other problem was with python but I have since resolved that one by packaging up 2.5.2 with the release instead of relying on leopard’s built-in one, should work well.

    Anyway keep coming back here to refresh, as once I solve the .app issue I will upload it for people to start testing! :D

  127. the build with shadows runs at very low fps.
    so i installed the build w/o shadows through 0launch and it runs quite well, just a bit sluggish now and then.
    and it’s a bit dark.

    ubuntu 8.04
    amd 4200+ x2
    7600gs with drivers included in ubuntu

    want more levels :D

    screenshot at http://www.xup.in/dl,78468800/Bildschirmfoto-8.png/

  128. Ok guys and gals it is in a very raw form for the Mac OSX build but it should work for people if they follow my instructions carefully, also this will probably only work on intel macs, sorry powerpc people!
    http://www.crystalspace3d.org/downloads/contrib/celstart-1.9.0-r31131-CELr3706-OSX-x86.tar.bz2

    Download and extract it, then there should be a sexy YoFrankie.app which has a nice icon and everything, if you click it, it will not work, yay! Next step is to have a YoFrankie.celzip handy (exact spelling and case!) and then right-click on the YoFrankie.app and go “show package contents”, once in there go Contents/MacOS/ and paste this said .celzip inside.

    Ok, now try running it by clicking the YoFrankie.app icon again, see if it does anything. If not, please open up a terminal and go cd YoFrankie.app/Contents/MacOS, then go ./celstart_wrapper and tell me what it says :) If it asks for missing libs, go into the lib directory inside the pack and rename the asking libs to exactly what celstart wants, then rinse and repeat for any others it asks until it works. Please tell me which ones you renamed and what you renamed them to so I can fix this package!

    Ok if you’re this far then it shouldn’t be too much harder to deal with :) Please tell me if you get something like glcg complaining with no visuals other than the HUD, or if you have no input on the keyboard. These two issues are apparent on my mac but I got around it by hacking the celstart.cfg file and setting the control keys manually and setting the rendermanager to rlcompat (but it looks really bad).

    GOOD LUCK! :D

  129. @Alex/MistaED: I downloaded the file linked in post 138. I then downloaded the YoFrankie.celzip from post 48. This initially just created a folder because it was automatically extracted, but using “Download as” solved that. the .celzip was copied to theContents/MacOS/ folder. Still clicken the icon did not work, so i ran celstart_wrapper and got this output:

    hst138-37-91-97:MacOS rusmus$ ./celstart_wrapper
    dyld: Library not loaded: /opt/local/lib/libpng12.0.dylib
    Referenced from: /Users/rusmus/Downloads/YoFrankie.app/Contents/MacOS/./celstart
    Reason: image not found
    ./celstart_wrapper: line 12: 11962 Trace/BPT trap ./celstart YoFrankie.celzip

    (so far everything is happening in my Downloads directory)
    At this point I am asked to rename files…I am not entirely sure how this should be done. I found libpng12.0.dylib in the lib directory. I then created a directory /opt/local/lib and copied all the dylib files into that. I then got this:

    hst138-37-91-97:MacOS rusmus$ ./celstart_wrapper
    dyld: Library not loaded: @executable_path/../Library/Frameworks/Cg.framework/Cg
    Referenced from: /Users/rusmus/Downloads/YoFrankie.app/Contents/MacOS/./celstart
    Reason: image not found
    ./celstart_wrapper: line 12: 11996 Trace/BPT trap ./celstart YoFrankie.celzip

    I have no idea what @executable_path should be. It seems that some installation step that puts a lot of files in secret places is missing…could you elaborate on the renaming step? Cheers

  130. Thank you very much yoff for your input, the Cg stuff makes sense now in terms of how libraries and frameworks differ, if you go into the lib directory, move the Cg binary out, and make 3 directories from Contents, Library/Frameworks/Cg.framework/, then move that Cg file in, see if that fixes that issue.

    As for libpng and friends, try just moving them into the MacOS directory instead of /opt/local/lib, I want everything contained into the .app without any external changes to the system.

  131. A Mac OS/X package is now available for testing: http://crystalspace3d.org/downloads/YoFrankie/YoFrankie-OSX.tar.bz2

  132. Got it running using 0install on OpenSuse 11.0 (had to install lzma library also) on NVidia 8800 and Python 2.5.2.

    Now the question is: how to enter menu in this game? Esc is not working. I need to switch fullscreen and change camera style so that game becomes playable.

  133. hello, my friends, this is an exelent game, we have to buy it, to get more games like this, please people do not get it without pay it, i mean the complete game, do not get it from megauplaod, nor torrent, etcthis is our time to be bigger, jesus loves you people, see you!

    /Applications/YoFrankie.app/Contents/MacOS
    /Library/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/Current/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/sbin:/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11/bin:/usr/local/mysql/bin:/Applications/YoFrankie.app/Contents/MacOS:/Applications/YoFrankie.app/Contents/MacOS/lib/:/Applications/YoFrankie.app/Contents/MacOS/python/lib/:

    libvorbisfile.3.dylib is definately on the LD_PATH , and for good measure the PATH too, but its not so happy. :(
